Multiple award-winning singer and performer Rema has addressed and cleared the air on a misrepresented comment he made about Nigerian artists.

Afrobeats star Rema recently addressed a misrepresentation of his words by Album Talks regarding his stance on Nigerian artists repping their roots. In a tweet, Album Talks quoted Rema’s interview with Dazed, suggesting that he implied many Afrobeats stars were failing to represent their heritage.

However, Rema clarified that his statement was specifically about being one of the few mainstream artists from Benin City, Nigeria, and not a general critique of the industry. He had quoted the tweet saying, “In context of being one of the very few mainstream Artists from Benin. Stop the 🧢”.

In his original interview, Rema expressed his deep commitment to showcasing his culture and heritage. He emphasized that, unlike other cultures, not many artists from his region have reached mainstream success, making it essential for him to carry that representation forward.

He had said in the interview: “Unlike other…cultures, there aren’t many of us repping where we’re from, you know what I mean? So I feel like I have to bring it every time with me. Still I can’t stop to…”
