Portable sentenced to 3 months in prison
Controversial Nigerian street-hop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been sentenced to 3 months in prison by a Chief Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State, after being found guilty of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo convicted the singer on two of the three charges filed against him. Portable was handed a one-month jail term with an option of a ₦10,000 fine for conspiracy to commit assault and a two-month sentence with an option of a ₦20,000 fine for unlawful assault. He was, however, acquitted of the third count relating to the alleged theft of musical equipment.
The case stems from an incident that occurred on November 18, 2022, in the Okeosa, Ilogbo area of the Ifo Magisterial District, where Portable physically assaulted a police inspector, Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi, and resisted officers who had come to serve him an arrest warrant. The charge sheet further alleged that the singer and unnamed accomplices conspired to assault the officer, in violation of Sections 517 and 351 of the Ogun State Criminal Code Laws, 2006.
In addition to the assault charges, Portable was previously accused of stealing musical equipment on multiple occasions in 2022, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a Studio 2 interface connection cable, and an AKG P420 condenser microphone. However, the court dismissed the theft charge due to insufficient evidence.
The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Awoleke, told the court that the singer had repeatedly evaded court appearances, leading to his remand last Thursday. Portable was initially granted bail in the sum of ₦300,000 with two sureties, both required to be members of his immediate family but has now been sentenced to prison.
With the judgment delivered, the singer now faces a three-month custodial sentence, which can be set aside if he opts to pay the combined ₦30,000 fine for both counts.
