Nigerian gospel music sensation, Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action against allegations of defamation circulating on social media platforms.

The renowned artist, known for his uplifting melodies and spiritual lyrics, has lodged a formal petition with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, through his legal representatives at Fortress Link Law firm.

The controversy arose following the recent revelation of the newborn son of fellow gospel artist, Mercy Chinwo and her husband during the Easter celebrations. Fans took to social media to comment on the child's resemblance, with some speculating that the child bore a striking similarity to Nathaniel Bassey.

In response to these claims, Bassey's legal team identified four individuals allegedly responsible for perpetuating the rumors. The accused parties, identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid, purportedly spread the unfounded allegations online, causing the speculation to go viral.

Addressing the media, Bassey's legal representatives emphasized the seriousness of the matter, stating that the allegations extended beyond mere speculation and constituted defamation under the law. They highlighted the inclusion of Bassey's image alongside the false claims as evidence of malicious intent.

The legal team's petition to the police urged swift action to investigate and charge the accused individuals in accordance with the law. They stressed the impact of the allegations on Bassey's reputation as a respected gospel minister, whose music has touched the lives of countless individuals worldwide.

In the formal petition submitted on Monday, April 1, 2024, Nathaniel Bassey's attorneys, Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia, implored law enforcement authorities to address the matter promptly. They emphasized their client's commitment to upholding his integrity and safeguarding his professional reputation against unwarranted attacks.

The petition, partly reading, "Our client is a gospel music minister whose songs and ministrations have impacted the lives of so many from different walks of life across the globe," shows the significance of the issue at hand and Bassey's determination to seek justice.

As the investigation unfolds, the gospel community awaits the outcome, hoping for a resolution that upholds truth and accountability in the face of defamation.
