'I’m a different breed! GOD’s baby' – Mr May D declares amid comparisons

Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as Mr May D, has stirred controversy on social media after issuing a strong warning to music fans who compare him to Afrobeats superstar Ayo Balogun, aka Wizkid.
The Ile Ijo hitmaker took to X with a bold statement about his influence in the Nigerian music industry, emphasizing that he is in a league of his own.
“Don’t ever compare me to anyone in this industry again!! Especially Wiz!! I’m a different breed!!! GOD’s baby,” May D wrote.
His comment quickly ignited heated discussions among fans and critics, with many debating his stance on social media. Amid the uproar, May D further recounted a past incident where Wizkid performed his song Too Fine—a collaboration with rapper Kel—while he was in the audience.
“I remember when I went to an event and Wizkid was performing my song with Kel Too Fine, and I was in the crowd. I still love him till date, but never compare,” he added.
May D rose to fame after signing with Square Records, the former record label owned by the now-defunct music duo P-Square, in 2011. However, in August 2012, he parted ways with the label, a move he believes significantly impacted his career trajectory.
His recent statements have further fueled conversations about his legacy in the music industry and his place among Afrobeats icons.
