Davido reflects on his journey, family, and the meaning behind 5ive

Afrobeats superstar Davido recently opened up in a heartfelt interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, where he spoke about his personal growth, the emotional story behind his latest album 5ive, and what fans can expect next in his evolving career.
In the conversation, Davido reflected on his early days, from watching tour vlogs on YouTube and dreaming of stardom to now selling out arenas worldwide. He described how surreal it feels to witness African music’s global rise, admitting he never imagined his music would take him this far.
“When good things start happening quickly, you barely realise it,” Davido said. “I remember sitting at my laptop, opening Logic, telling myself, ‘I want to make it as a musician.’ Watching people like Soulja Boy’s vlogs, MTV Cribs. I just wanted that life.”
The interview took a deeply personal turn as Davido opened up about the tragic loss of his son in 2022 and how fatherhood, faith, and family helped him find strength again. He revealed the birth of his twins brought unexpected healing, with one of the babies bearing a striking resemblance to his late son. “It’s like he came back,” Davido shared emotionally.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the title of his fifth studio album 5ive, Davido explained that while it initially felt like a simple choice, he later discovered the number five symbolizes hope, grace, change, and growth themes that perfectly capture his recent experiences. “It became more than just a number. It reflected my journey, my losses, my wins, and my evolution as a person and an artist,” he said.
The Unavailable hitmaker also addressed rumours of a collaborative album with American R&B star Chris Brown, confirming they have over 20 unreleased tracks together and hinting at future projects.
Looking ahead, Davido announced an international tour kicking off in the U.S. this July, alongside exciting ventures in film and television. He revealed he’s executive producing a movie, a series, and working on a personal documentary chronicling his life and career.
Despite his success, Davido stressed the importance of family and resilience, sharing advice for others navigating loss. “If I can go through this, you can too,” he told Ebro, underlining his belief in staying positive and leaning on loved ones.
With new music, global performances, and film projects on the horizon, Davido continues to solidify his place as one of Africa’s most influential cultural icons.
