Chike shares honest story about stepping away from church

Nigerian singer Chike has opened up about the personal experiences that shaped his relationship with faith and why he no longer attends church, while also making headlines for a generous gesture to a devoted fan.

In a recent conversation, Chike recalled an awkward incident from years back that pushed him away from church gatherings. He explained that he once visited a church where the praise-and-worship leader happened to be someone he had a past relationship with. The unexpected encounter made him uncomfortable and unable to focus.

“The lady leading praise and worship… we had history,” he said. “I was having flashbacks. She was praying, and I was just wondering what was happening.” The discomfort was so strong that Chike stopped attending after a week.

He clarified, however, that his decision had nothing to do with abandoning his belief in God. He recounted moments earlier in his career when he relied heavily on prayer, especially during a difficult period while living in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend. “I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me,” he shared.

Chike also recalled a confusing moment shortly after dropping his debut album, when he unknowingly consumed a very strong edible. “Three, four days into the album release, I didn’t even know where I was,” he said.

Although he still believes in God, Chike said the structure of church doesn’t align with his life. He stressed that what truly matters, whether in personal life, public life, or leadership, is treating people well. “You just need to do right by people,” he said, adding that he doesn’t feel pressured to fit into a strict definition of Christian living.

Meanwhile, the singer recently warmed the hearts of fans online after rewarding a female listener who showed exceptional loyalty to his music. Following Spotify’s annual Wrapped report, a fan identified as Ope shared that Chike was her top artist of the year, with an impressive 36,341 minutes of listening, placing her in his top 1% of listeners.

She posted a screenshot and jokingly complained that the singer had ignored her dedication. Chike eventually saw the tweet and responded warmly, asking for her bank details: “Good morning! Your bank, please!”

Though he didn’t disclose the amount he sent, the gesture sparked excitement among fans, many of whom rushed to share their own Spotify stats in hopes of receiving the same treatment.
