Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” was a monumental figure in the Nigerian music scene whose career spanned several decades. Her music, film, and social advocacy contributions have left an indelible mark on the Nigerian cultural landscape.

Following her recent passing today,  July 31, 2024, it is fitting to celebrate her legacy by revisiting some of her most iconic songs. Here are ten of Onyeka Onwenu's greatest hits;

1. One Love

2. Wait For Me (ft. King Sunny Ade)

3. You and I

A classic love ballad from 1991, You and I is another of Onyeka Onwenu’s many romance songs. The song has been featured in various Nigerian films, making it a timeless piece. 

4. Ekwe

Ekwe, released in 1984, is a fusion of funk and Igbo folk music. It tells the story of a relentless suitor and also showcases Onyeka's storytelling prowess. The song's cultural fusion makes it a beloved track in her discography.

5. Bia Nulu

In Bia Nulu, Onyeka calls upon God to listen to the cries of the people, reflecting her deep spirituality and connection to her roots. 6. Alleluya

Also, it underscores her level of international recognition as she and Winnie were good acquaintances as noted in her book “My Father’s Daughter.”

9. Ochie Dike featuring Phyno

Ochie Dike is a heartfelt tribute to motherhood, where Onyeka prays for her mother's well-being. Released in 2016, she reminisces on her mother and how it is with her gone. The song shows her blending personal narratives with universal themes, making it relatable to listeners.

10. Run Goodluck Run

Perhaps one of her top three controversial songs, Onyeka wrote the song Run Goodluck Run sometime in 2014. She begs the then Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan to leave office before he is hurt. She also wrote another for his wife Mama Peace to appreciate her efforts as First Lady. Then sometime in 2022, she spoke on how those songs cost her her position as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.
