The Nigerian rap scene has been grossly underrated over the years and of recent, rappers like Blaqbonez, Olamide, Odumodublvck have been working hard to put Nigerian Rap on the map.

There are currently two rap albums that have hit the 100 million streams mark on Spotify unlike the Afrobeats albums which are grossing over 1 billion. Although that’s still a long way to go, we would be taking a look at the two rap albums that have been pioneering Nigerian rap.

Olamide - Carpe Diem

Olamide released the album Carpe Diem under Empire Distribution on October 8, 2020. Currently, it is recorded to have over 500 million total streams and a percentage of that is attributed to Spotify with over 180 million streams.

The album was Olamide’s 11th studio album and further stamped him as a pioneer of rap in Nigeria.

Carpe Diem was a 12 track album featuring stars like Fireboy DML, Bad Boy Timz, Omah Lay, Phyno, Peruzzi and Bella Shmurda. The producers were Young John, Pheelz, ID Cabasa, P.Priime, and VStix.

Odumodublvck who is currently signed under Native Records bags the spot for second highest streamed rap album over 100 million on Spotify.

Eziokwu is a 14 track album released on October 6, 2023. It achieved this feat in a very short time and is barely over the 100 million streaks mark on Spotify.

Odumodublvck, and Teezee headed the production of the album and it featured Amaarae, Blaqbonez, Wale, Bloody Civilian, Fireboy DML, Reeplay, Teezee, PsychoYP, Bella Shmurda, Cruel Santino, ECko Miles, and Zlatan. The mixtape’s cover art was created by Olaolu Slawn.

It is no surprise that Odumodublvck and Olamide hold these spots but we are hopeful that other rappers follow the initiatives and surpass these limits.
