This ranking integrates multiple quantitative and qualitative metrics—including streaming performance, social media engagement, and the impact of recent releases—to provide a comprehensive assessment of artist influence within the genre.
When we posted the Afrobeats Power Ranking for January on our social media pages a few weeks ago, many people had questions about how we got at this data. Now here's how:
Core Metrics in the Ranking Process
The ranking is constructed using the following key data points:
1. Global Streaming Volume: The aggregate number of streams an artist achieves worldwide within the month serves as a primary indicator of reach and popularity.
2. Recent Release Activity: Emphasis is placed on music released within the prior 30 days, encompassing singles, EPs, and albums, to reflect current market momentum.
3. Social Media Engagement: Metrics capturing online interactions, fan-generated content, and audience activity are analyzed to gauge an artist’s digital footprint.
4. Radio and Retail Data: Performance data from over 2,000 radio stations and 550 retail providers are incorporated to assess broader industry impact.
Data Acquisition and Validation
Data is sourced directly from major Digital Streaming Platforms (DSPs) such as YouTube Music, Pandora, Deezer, Spotify, Apple Music, and Audiomack. To maintain temporal relevance, priority is assigned to releases within the evaluation month.

On a monthly cycle, comprehensive data on Afrobeats artists—spanning global streaming figures and the performance of new releases—is collected and processed. These inputs are synthesized using a proprietary point-based algorithm, which generates the final top 50 ranking for the period.
