Luis de la Fuente renews Spain's contract after World Cup triumph

Luis de la Fuente will remain head coach of the Spanish national team until at least the 2030 FIFA World Cup after agreeing to extend his contract with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). His previous deal was due to expire in 2028.

The 65-year-old has overseen a highly successful period for Spain, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2023, Euro 2024 and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The new agreement will see him lead Spain into the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

The contract extension Luis de la Fuente's previous contract was due to run until the end of Euro 2028. The new agreement will keep him in charge of Spain through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged across Spain, Portugal and Morocco. The RFEF has also left the door open to extending his deal beyond 2030.

RFEF president Rafael Louzán also confirmed that De la Fuente's new deal will come with improved financial terms, while leaving open the possibility of extending his stay beyond 2030.

One of the biggest attractions of the new agreement is the opportunity for De la Fuente to lead Spain at the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Spain will enter that tournament as defending world champions, giving De la Fuente the opportunity to attempt to retain the trophy in a tournament partly hosted on Spanish soil. The 2030 tournament therefore represents a particularly important milestone for both the coach and the Spanish national team.
