Ballon d’Or 2026: Who are the nominees for coach of the year?

The nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or Men’s Coach of the Year award, also known as the Johan Cruyff Trophy, have been revealed, with some of the biggest names in European football making the shortlist.

The award recognises the coach who has made the biggest impact through his team’s performances and achievements during the season. This year’s nominees include Mikel Arteta, Luis de la Fuente, Unai Emery, Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany.

Mikel Arteta – Arsenal

Mikel Arteta earned his nomination after another impressive campaign with Arsenal. The Spanish coach guided the Gunners to the Premier League title, ending a successful season with one of the strongest teams in English football. Arteta’s tactical development and ability to build a competitive squad have continued to make him one of the leading coaches in Europe.

Luis de la Fuente – Spain

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is another major contender after guiding the national team to World Cup glory in 2026. Winning football's biggest international tournament gives De la Fuente a powerful case for the award, particularly after Spain's impressive performances throughout the competition.

Unai Emery – Aston Villa

Unai Emery also makes the shortlist following another successful period at Aston Villa. The experienced Spanish manager guided the club to Europa League success, adding another major European trophy to his impressive managerial career.

Luis Enrique – Paris Saint-Germain

Luis Enrique enters the race after an extraordinary season with Paris Saint-Germain. The Spanish coach guided PSG to several major trophies, including the Champions League and Ligue 1, alongside other domestic and international honours. His success in Paris makes him one of the leading candidates to win the Johan Cruyff Trophy.

Vincent Kompany – Bayern Munich

Vincent Kompany completes the five-man shortlist after an excellent campaign with Bayern Munich. The Belgian manager guided the German giants to the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup. Kompany's success in his early years at Bayern has further enhanced his reputation as one of Europe's emerging elite managers.
