Why 26/27 Champions League fixtures would be played at Stamford Bridge

Here is why some fixtures in the group stage of the 26/27 Champions League would be played at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge.

Stamford Bridge will host UEFA Champions League football in the 2026/27 season, but it will be Ukrainian side FC Shakhtar Donetsk using Chelsea’s historic home as their European base.

Subject to regulatory approval, Shakhtar will play their home matches in the Champions League league phase at Stamford Bridge this season.

The unusual arrangement comes after Chelsea’s disappointing 2025/26 campaign saw the London club fail to qualify for European football, leaving Stamford Bridge available for Shakhtar’s Champions League campaign.

Why can’t Shakhtar play their home games in Ukraine?

The decision is largely linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Shakhtar have not been able to play their European home fixtures in Donetsk for years and have instead been forced to move their matches to different cities across Europe.

In recent seasons, the Ukrainian club have used venues in cities including Hamburg, Germany, and Warsaw, Poland, as they continue to compete in European competitions away from their traditional home.

For the 2026/27 Champions League campaign, the club has now chosen London as its temporary European home.

Stamford Bridge provides Shakhtar with a high-profile stadium capable of hosting Champions League fixtures, while Chelsea's absence from European competition means the venue is available.

Chelsea said the club was pleased to offer Shakhtar the opportunity to play their Champions League matches in London and confirmed that both clubs will work together to ensure the fixtures are staged safely and smoothly.

“FC Shakhtar have played in countries across Europe and we look forward to welcoming them to London for their Champions League campaign this year,” Chelsea said.

“We will be working with the Shakhtar team closely over the coming weeks to ensure that matchdays run safely and smoothly for their team and supporters.”

The Ukrainian club expressed its gratitude to Chelsea, describing the opportunity to play at Stamford Bridge as a special one.

“Playing our Champions League home matches at Stamford Bridge is a special opportunity for Shakhtar. We are grateful to Chelsea Football Club for the opportunity to host our games at this special venue.”

Shakhtar also highlighted the history of Stamford Bridge and the atmosphere the stadium could provide for both Ukrainian and English supporters.

“Stamford Bridge is one of the most famous stadiums in world football, with an incredible history and atmosphere. We are convinced that Shakhtar’s matches in London will provide unforgettable emotions for Ukrainian and English fans.”
