Chelsea Football Club on the verge of completing the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion in one of the most surprising transfer moves of the summer.

Chelsea's interest in Welbeck reflects the club's desire to add experience to a squad largely built around young talent. Having spent the majority of his career in the Premier League, Welbeck brings leadership, versatility and a strong work ethic qualities that could prove invaluable over the course of a demanding campaign.

The Blues have been in discussions with Brighton over the experienced striker in recent days, with negotiations progressing quickly as Chelsea look to add a proven Premier League goalscorer to Xabi Alonso's squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.

There are reports that Chelsea and Brighton have reached an agreement in principle for Welbeck's transfer, with the 35-year-old now expected to undergo a medical before putting pen to paper on a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge. While neither club has officially confirmed the deal, all signs point towards an announcement being made in the coming days if the final formalities are completed without complications.

The former Manchester United, Arsenal and Brighton forward has consistently impressed with his intelligent movement, pressing ability and knack for scoring important goals despite battling injuries throughout his career. Xabi Alonso has been keen to strike the right balance between youth and experience. Welbeck's arrival would provide reliable depth in attack while also offering mentorship to Chelsea's emerging forwards.

Although he may not be viewed as an automatic starter every week, his experience in high-pressure matches and ability to play across the front line could make him an important asset in both domestic and European competitions.
