Arne Slot has explained his reason for not bringing on Mohamed Salah in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Slot was speaking during his post-match press conference after the game against PSG where he explained that Mohamed Salah was left out against Paris Saint-Germain. According to him, he took that decision for tactical reasons, not injury or discipline.

He said,

"The last part of the game was about surviving for us, this was a 20-25 mins where we were only defendin and it’s better to save his energy for the upcoming games".

After Liverpool conceded two goals, Slot said the game had reached a point where his team was essentially in survival mode. According to him instead of chasing goals, Liverpool were focused on limiting damage against a dominant PSG side.

He also clarified that he didn’t want Salah coming on late just to defend deep in their own box, which didn’t suit his strengths. The team’s situation made it more about defensive stability than attacking impact.

The Reds will face PSG in the second leg at Anfield on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as they look to overturn the two-goal deficit.
