Enzo Maresca reflects on Chelsea’s defeat against Bayern Munich

SHARE

Enzo Maresca and his Chelsea team failed their first test of the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

The Blues were heading into the competition having won the Club World Cup by beating Paris Saint-Germain. Chelsea needed to make a statement when they met Bayern Munich, but they were unable to match up with the Bundesliga Champions.

Bayern went ahead in the game from an own goal by Trevoh Chalobah before Harry Kane extended the lead from the spot. Cole Palmer fired Chelsea back into the game three minutes later. Any hope of Chelsea getting back into the game ended after Malo Gusto's mistake, which gave Kane his brace and Bayern their third goal.

What did Enzo Maresca say about Chelsea's defeat against Bayern Munich?

Maresca was speaking to the press after the game at the Allianz Arena where he praised the performance of his young team but believes the lack of experience was the reason why they could not take any point away from Germany

He said,

" I think the first 20 minutes, we started very well, created two chances without conceding nothing. Then we conceded a goal we can avoid. The dynamic then changed a little bit. In terms of experience between them and us, there is a huge difference because of the games they have played, because of the age. We competed in the right way, in this stadium against this team. I have the feeling that we can build something special from this defeat."

Chelsea will face Benfica in their next Champions League fixture at Stamford Bridge with Jose Mourinho in charge of the Portuguese club.
