Nigerian music star Adekunle Gold has called out Wema Bank after the financial institution referenced his recent giveaway campaign in a promotional message without his consent.

The singer, popularly known as AG Baby, recently gifted cash prizes to several Nigerians who graduated with first-class honors, in a gesture aimed at celebrating academic excellence. The initiative quickly went viral and was widely praised on social media.

However, the campaign caught an unexpected twist when a Wema Bank representative shared a promotional message from the bank that appeared to piggyback on Adekunle Gold’s initiative. The message read: “AG Baby no send you first class gift? AN No wahala, ALAT dey for you. Enjoy up to 70% off your fave brands this weekend via eVouchers on the ALAT app — no be crime say we no get first class.”

The message, referencing both the singer’s giveaway and his popular moniker, sparked reactions online including from the artist himself.

Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Adekunle Gold tagged Wema Bank and its digital platform ALAT, questioning the use of his name and image in the advert. “Dear @wemabank @alat_ng when this one start? You’ll be hearing from my people,” he wrote, hinting at possible legal action.

As of now, Wema Bank has not issued a public response to the controversy.
