Real Madrid's quest to extend their lead in the league came to and in the game vs Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu when they hosted their arc rivals in the first El Classico of the season.

Both teams came into the game with high hopes and full of confidence following an impressive UEFA Champions League display during the week. The Galacticos came from two goals down to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 while the Catalonias thrashed Bayern Munich against all odds 4-1, these results show their fans' confidence ahead of the Real Madrid vs Barcelona clash.

The first half ended goalless with both sides creating a handful of chances but none of them were taken. The closest chance of the half came for Real Madrid when Kylian Mbappe found the back of the net but it was ruled out as offside by the Video assistant referee ( VAR).

The second half was a different story entirely as Barcelona dominated the game scoring four goals in less than 45 minutes. A brace for Robert Lewandowski, and a goal each from Raphinha and Yamine Lamal ensured that Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the table by six points.

"We knew they were going to use this high line and we just missed it,” Carlo Ancelotti said. “[Mbappe] sometimes fell offside, but he had three or four chances to score and needed a better finishing touch. When they scored those back-to-back goals, it took the energy out of us. This is a complicated moment for us. It hurts to lose a game and especially after going 42 games unbeaten, but we shouldn’t just throw everything away because this team will play better."
