What is Davido Day?
Davido Days is a special celebration dedicated to renowned Nigerian superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido. Notably, there are two days declared for the artist - One by the city of Houston, Texas, and the other by Davido’s town of birth, Atlanta, USA.
These days honor Baba Imade's contributions to the music industry and his role as a cultural ambassador for Nigeria. The Davido days align with similar honours given to other prominent artists, such as Wizkid, who was celebrated with a dedicated day in Minnesota.
When and Where Did Davido Day Start?
Davido Day was first proclaimed by the City of Houston, Texas, on July 7, 2023.
The special day was declared by Houston's mayor, Sylvester Turner. It was primarily after his sold-out performance at the iconic Toyota Centre in Houston, which has 20,000 concert capacity.
In the proclamation, Mayor Turner stated, "I, Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the city of Houston, do hereby proclaim July 7, 2023, as ."
Then on November 18, 2023, the Mayor, Andre Dickens, and the Atlanta City Council declared November 18 ‘Davido Day’. This was after he headlined the A.W.A.Y. Festival at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
In a message to the singer on his birthday on November 21, 2023, the mayor noted that Davido has “captivated audiences worldwide, becoming a global icon in the music industry.” He continued, “On behalf of the City of Atlanta, thank you for your tireless efforts as a renowned singer, songwriter, producer, business leader, philanthropist, and community advocate.”
Throughout your remarkable career, you’ve amassed an incredible number of accolades and continue to use your platform to give back to communities in the United States and throughout Africa.”
Earlier, the Atlanta City Council, in a statement, said, “Be it resolved that we, the members of the Atlanta City Council, on behalf of the citizens of Atlanta, do hereby proclaim November 18, 2023, as Davido Day in the City of Atlanta.”
How has Davido Day been celebrated so far?
On July 7, 2024, the only celebrations were by fans who posted in that regard.
