Why Eguavoen left his head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria role
According to recent reports the interim head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from his role.
Following what many would categorize as a mixed AFCON 2025 qualifiers for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in September 2024, reports have now confirmed that the NFF technical Director Augustine Eguaveon who took charge of the team as an interim head coach for fixtures against Benin Republic and Rwanda has stepped down from his position.
Speculations as to the reason behind his decision surfaced on social media with other reports confirming that Eguaveon himself had stated that his position had been for just the two games in agreement with the NFF.
During his short tenure, the Super Eagles achieved a commanding 3-0 win against Benin Republic and managed a goalless stalemate with Rwanda in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). These results have played a crucial role in keeping Nigeria's hopes alive for qualification, with the Super Eagles currently ranked in first place in their group with 4 points in two games.
It remains to be seen, the next line of action for the NFF ahead of the next international break following their failure to secure the signature of their preferred head coach Bruno Labbadia due to unclear circumstances.
