Chelsea confirms the exit of Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid

La Liga side, Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea after there was a bit of stalling on his deal in the past few days.

The deal was confirmed on the official website of both clubs on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, a deal that had Chelsea supporters with mixed emotions and feelings. The England international passed a medical and agreed to a five-year deal to join Atletico while in Madrid, for a fee which is in the region of £34 million.

What did Chelsea say about Conor Gallagher's departure to Atletico Madrid?

Chelsea released a statement confirming Gallagher's departure accompanied by a video montage of his best moments at the club.

The statement read,

"Conor Gallagher has completed a permanent transfer to Atletico Madrid. We wish Conor the very best as he begins a new chapter in his career."

Gallagher also released a video on his official Instagram account where he thanked everyone at the club for the support they have shown to him since he was aged 8.

"To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true, It's been an absolute honour every time I put on the shirt, and it was a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions. I loved every moment. These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans. Hearing the chant of my name at the Bridge is a special feeling, and the banner you displayed [against Spurs] meant the world to me. Thank you for everything. I wish the club all the best for the future, and I hope to see you all soon at Stamford Bridge."

Why did Conor leave Chelsea?

There were reports which circulated in the media that Chelsea told Gallagher that he was only going to be a squad player. On the other hand, the contract that was offered to him as an extension did not sit well with the English International which was the reason why he decided to leave the Blues.

The 24-year-old signed a five-year year deal which will keep him at the Wanda Metropolitano until the summer of 2029.
