French Football Federation (FFF) bans players from fasting during Ramadan

The French Football Federation (FFF) have confirmed that there is a new law in place banning players called up to the national team from fasting during the month of Ramadan.

According to ESPN, The president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, has implemented new regulations concerning players who fast during Ramadan while on duty with France. Diallo claimed that the FFF's founding statutes contain a "principle of neutrality," and that these measures are intended to "prevent religion from interfering with an athlete."

The updated FFF rules state that French national team players cannot fast during Ramadan, and must instead adhere to the usual schedule of team activities. Athletes who observe Ramadan, which began between March 10-11 2024, and will likely end around April 10, 2024, will not be allowed to fast while at the Clairefontaine training base and will have to make up for any missed days of fasting at the end of the religious festival.

All of the French national team coaches, from U16 coach Lionel Rouxel to senior head coach Didier Deschamps, informed their players of the new regulations at the beginning of the international break.

It has been reported that some players are not happy about this decision as it indicates that the football body does not respect their religion or them as a person.
