'Wizkid introduced me to Amapiano' - DJ Maphorisa explains
South African DJ and record producer, DJ Maphorisa, explains how he was introduced to the Amapaino sound.
During an interview with Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide(Shopsydoo), DJ Maphorisa explained that Wizkid introduced him to Amapiano. Amapiano is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South Africa. It emerged in the early 2010s and has since gained widespread popularity in South Africa and internationally.
The DJ added that amapiano was like an "underground and instrumental only" sound before his eyes were opened to it. He stated that he journeyed to Pretoria and encountered Wizkid, who happened to be in South Africa at the time. Later, they crossed paths again when he had a scheduled performance. The rapper, who had boasted about revolutionising the music industry, recounted that during the event, a DJ was playing an Amapiano sound, which caught Wizkid's attention.
The sound was also new to him, and Wizkid advised him to take notice of the music and the need to "Jump on it" immediately. DJ Maphorisa stressed the importance of staying attentive to emerging sounds as the music genre continues to evolve. In Addition, WurlD took to social media to share a snippet of his upcoming collaboration with Odumodublvck and South African DJ Maphorisa. The Afrobeat artist shared a snippet of the upcoming collaboration via social media. This would be the first collaboration between any of the artists.
