The head coach of the Three Lions of England, Gareth Southgate has reacted to the criticism that Harry Maguire has gotten in recent months.
Harry Maguire was a second-half substitute for England in a friendly away at Scotland and scored an own goal which led to many of the home supporters jeering at him in a 3-1 win.
Gareth Southgate backed the Manchester United defender at his post-match press conference. According to him, he doesn't have an issue with the opposition fans jeering at Maguire but his problem is with the England supporters.
"One of our players comes onto the field and the opposing fans react as they do. I’m fine with that, in terms of the Scotland fans. But why is that created with the ridiculous comments that exist around the player? It’s a joke. He has been one of England’s most important players in a period of English football where we’ve got as close as anything in 50 years to doing well, he’s been a stalwart within that."
Maguire has also been under scrutiny by supporters of Manchester United following his bad form in the last few seasons.
