Nigerian singer-songwriter Bukola Elemide, popularly known as Asa, has announced the death of her mother following a sudden battle with a brain tumour.
The 43-year-old musician shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, paying a touching tribute to the woman she described as the pillar of her life.
The award-winning singer portrayed her late mother as a deeply loving and supportive figure whose quiet strength shaped her journey. She wrote: “My mother, my reason to be, my queen, my everything. A sudden brain tumour came without warning and took you too soon.”
Asa painted a warm picture of her mother as a generous and kind soul with a calm personality and a distinct charm. She recalled: “You were extremely shy, and so funny. My biggest fan. You couldn’t hold a note to save your life, but you sang every one of my songs with your whole heart.”
The tribute ended on a note of both grief and gratitude: “Your strength, your love, your spirit will remain with me forever. Rest now, Mum.”
Following the announcement, Asa’s post received an outpouring of sympathy and condolences from fans, colleagues, and fellow celebrities, including Yemi Alade, Tiwa Savage and Johnny Drille.
Asa, known for her soulful voice and timeless hits like Eye Adaba, Jailer, and Femi Mo, has built a successful international career spanning nearly two decades. The soul singer has released several critically acclaimed albums, including her self-titled debut in 2007, as well as more recent projects that continue to resonate with audiences across Africa and beyond. She remains one of Nigeria’s most respected and authentic voices in music.
At the time of writing, funeral arrangements have not been publicly announced. Our thoughts are with Asa and her family during this difficult period.
