The 10 Hottest Artists in Nigeria

Post by Demola OG, August 23rd, 2013

Within the time span of Summer 2012 and Summer 2013, several new artists have made their entrance into the music scene. Some have made a lot of noise with their music, but only a handful of artists really had us putting their songs on repeat, making noise when a song came on and made serious impact between the aforementioned time period.

The list below is a True, undiluted run down of the Artists that shaped, defined and led music among Nigerian consumers in the past year.

10. Burna Boy

Like To Party is a testament that you can catch a hit record without following the typical music format that rules the airwaves in Nigeria. Burna Boy appeared to have come from nowhere after “Like To Party” became an overwhelming hit all over Lagos and most parts of Nigeria, but the reality is that he has been dropping music since 2011 and finally caught his biggest hit in 2012. Burna then went on to deliver a quality video for not just his first single off the L.I.F.E album but for his other strong and widely accepted singles such as Tonight and Run My Race which were produced by Aristokrat in-house producer LeriQ.

9. Timaya

The Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa is still very relevant in the grand scheme of things. After replacing his in-house producer K-Solo with Young D, his sound became more full of youthful energy and translated seamlessly among the more modern audience consuming Nigerian music today. After releasing what most of us call a banger in his “Shake your Bum Bum” single in 2012, it was a required song that had to play at least twice at any given night. Then he went drop other extra catchy singles titled “Sexy Ladies”., “Club on Fire”, “Malonogede” and solid party album UPGRADE.

8. Ice Prince

After the huge success of Oleku, and the launch of Ice Prince‘s debut album in 2011; the critics felt like it was a fluke. However, Ice silenced them with Aboki and a number of fierce freestyles. When it comes to most sought after rappers in Nigeria or Nigerian music around the world, Ice Prince definitely leads the pack and has been able to package his flow and hooks properly for commercial success. He also confirms that he is the ‘best rapper singer surely’ on TRUTH; a recent freestyle he released earlier in 2013.

7. Olamide

Truth be told, Olamide has been putting in quality work since Young Erikina. However, it appears that he started flooding the streets with music in 2012 even before his album dropped and after the success of Ilefo ILLuminati and First Of All, Olamide continues to drop heat until this day from Rayban Abacha to the more popular , Durosoke and Baddo Love.

6. Iyanya

Although Iyanya was all over the gossip sites due to his many unsuccessful relationships, Iyanya definitely dominated Nigerian music for a good period in 2012. His Kukere single took him to a level he had never been before so he and his MMM group team took full advantage by dropping another overwhelming single, “Ur Waist” ft Emma Nyra which kept him up there with both feet rooted deep. In addition, he recently added more fans to his base after touring the USA and UK during the Spring of 2013. It is agreed among many top promoters and DJs in the States that Iyanya’s USA tour has been the most successful among most Nigerian contemporary artist tours in the past 5 years.

 5. 2face Idibia

The most loved and respected artist in the Nigerian music industry, 2face Idibia did his rounds last year and killed the airwaves with his hit single Ihe Neme off his most recent studio album Away and Beyond. He then went quiet in the beginning of 2013 to prepare and participate in his wedding and honeymoon. Happy Married Life, Sir!

4. Wizkid

The StarBoy himself who has a well of talent and unnatural work ethic when it comes to things of music, stayed very relevant all through 2012 with the massive single Azonto and a plethora of good songs he has dropped with his new Starboy producers Legendury Beats and Maleek Berry. Although his name was mixed up among rumored conflict with EME, the label he is still signed to, he has managed to continue to drop hits and stay very relevant even on the international scene after dropping notable tracks like Drop It ft Wale and Blown Away with Angel.

3. Davido

If you ask most club and party goers what the hit of 2013 is so far, majority of them will probably say Gobe. Davido blew everyone away with the 1st single off his 2nd studio album and continues to drop strong singles such ask Kalo Konnect and One of A Kind. His most recent single Skelewu which dropped barely over a week ago is already on its way to claiming National Hit status. Davido has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with in the industry and continues to disappoint the naysayers.

2. D’banj

Who God has blessed, no man can curse; that is D’banj‘s story. Although he has not dropped any overwhelmingly engaging track in 2013; he killed everything with Oliver Twist in 2012 from going mainstream in the UK, to getting a Malibu worldwide placement deal for Oliver Twist song. D’banj continues to be one of the most relevant and distinct artists in the continent of Africa. D’banj is a true entertainer and anything he says, drops or headlines (in terms of shows/concerts) usually attracts a huge amount of people because we know that we will be entertained.

1. P Square

The Twin Kings of Africa!!! The Okoye twins are in a league all by themselves and continue to maintain their winning position. They brought us the massive Beautiful Onye and Chop My Money remix both last year and destabilized every huge plan any artist in the continent had of dominating the music scene. P-Square then went on to drop the killer visuals for Alingo and in 2013 delivered another widely accepted single and video Personally.

P-Square Personally occupies the #1 Spot on the “10 Hottest Artists in Nigeria” list as carefully and objectively selected by the notjustOk Team.

Worthy Mentions

1. Banky W

The EME boss decided to go back into the studio after playing executive role in grooming Wizkid and Skales as solo artists. Mr W blessed us with 2 strong singles Yes/No and Good Good Loving and displayed to us the true essence of R&B with his 3rd studio album, R&BW.

2. May D

After the P Square and May D separation, May D  dropped the visuals for another solid single, Gat Me High after which he released So Many Tinz produced by Fliptyce before releasing his debut album on his newly formed Confam Records in 2013.

KCEE, who had dropped 2 singles Okpekete and Give it to Me ft Flavour which were attempts at scoring a hit single, pleasantly surprised us all after Limpopo was released in 2013. He successfully gave fans what will probably end up being one of the top 3 songs of 2013, and followed it up with his new single Okoso.

4. Tiwa Savage

Ms. Tiwa Savage who recently got engaged and scored a well deserved Pepsi endorsement deal in 2012, remains relevant in the music scene and finally released her highly anticipated debut album, Once Upon A Time in 2013. “Eminado” (featuring Don Jazzy) is quickly becoming a fan favourite.

5. Flavour

Flavour is like the Rock Star of Nigeria who has been touring the world for majority of 2013 from his concerts in Australia, sold out show in Burkina Faso, USA Tour and a Cameroon tour coming soon. He also dropped some powerful singles like Ada Ada, Shake and Chinny Baby.

Well, there you have it. Do you agree with our list? Have your say below.

  17. paulmirabilis says:

D'Banj being on the list invalidates the whole arrangement. Plus, i donno your yardsticks but i do know that Kcee and Flavour are supposed to be on that list.

  18. login says:

PS: Think about this list very well before you argue.

  19. TMAN says:

9c List actually! But I tink I am still confused about Davido nd Wizkid which should come first!! I think Wizkid has a bigger advantage for signing into Akon’s Konvict Music….And I think P-Square and D’banj too are very Ok in those positions……The 2face at the moment is just not doing good….nd I personally think Kcee or Phyno should have handled his position!……..(1)P-Square; PERSONALLY, ALINGO, CHOP MY MONEY Remix, BEAUTIFUL ONYIYE Remix…..(2) D’banj with the success of his DB Records Label’s Compilation New Album (DKM) OLIVER TWIST, TOP OF THE WORLD, FINALLY, CASH FLOW ft Kayswitch, BLAME IT ON THE MONEY ft Snoop Lion and Big Sean……..(3 and 4) STILL DNT KNOW btw Davido nd Wizkid!! Lol…….(5) 2Face; IHE NE ME,(He has not done anything big as a star which he is and Phyno or Kcee would have been better for the position)

  20. Funkie says:

And what happened to Brymo, atleast he was on top of the game throughout 2012.

  21. Guest says:

Tiwa savage never sing anything after kele kele love…Which one be eminado….eminado ko,emi labo ni…and banky is just popular on the internet…

  22. Farouq Aina says:

    In My Honest Opinion, Wizkid is the hottest Nigerian artiste in the game. And this is how the list should follow;
    1) Wizkid
    3)Burna boy
    8)Wande Coal
    9)Tiwa savage

Reason Why I didn't put Timaya or 2face on this list is the fact that they haven't brought out a track for us in a while, Psquare However latest song is pure shit (the hell is haba habatically) its about time they hang their boots.
On the other hand, Wizkid has been delivering nice songs every week and his album is one too watch out for.

  23. omekaarizona says:

what are the yardstick considered for been hottest? You have to let us know the factors u considered before making the list then we can see if it was on merit or not.You can't make a list for the public without telling us the things considered before the selection

  24. Hayodeji Bhardmus says:

This is not just okay na OJORO.

  25. olu says:

    here is the true list.

    1. Wizkid

    5 Olamide
    6 .Iyanya
    7. Dbanj
    8. Kcee
    9. Burna boy
    10. Timaya

11 2face takes 11th position. we love him but he has not really delivered hits in the past 1 yr.

  26. seke says:

wizkid(comeon he has the highest number of followers in africa)
    ice prince

  27. titi says:

Mode 9 should be among top 3

  28. 9ja says:

Nice list….but I think wizkid is a million tyms beta dan davido….wizkid releases hot tracks almost evri week checkout his new song caro….its a million times beta dan davidos one of a kind nd kalo connect shits

  29. weahbaba says:

  30. Lagos Boy from Edo says:

This is NJO opinion not the fans so its nothing so serious. Make una just de look

  31. Anniberiee_Tripple6 says:

  32. leumas says:

C’mon where is Flavour? Tiwa savage has no biz here. She’s just a hype.. Phyno shud av been in her space.. Burna boy shud be higher on d list.. Black magic shud be on d worthy mention.. He makes unique music.. Where are d rappers VEC, Boogie,? 2baba is a legend we knw. He has no biz on d list.. The list is great dou nuff said..kudoz

  33. the list has the hottest musicians but not properly arranged and there are 3 obvious omission. You did not do justice in excluding Flavour, Kcee, and May D. I query the inclusion of 2face (though, no doubt naija best) and Iyanya. Burna boy should be 11th if we are to extend the list. here is an unbiased list (be informed that my list is drawn from artiste performance in the close of 2012 and the year 2013 so far):

    List of artiste
    10. D'banj (oliver twist, bachellorette).
    9. Timaya (my baby, ukwu).
    8. Ice prince (aboki, aboki rmx).

    6. May D (so many tinz, Gat Me High).
    5. Flavour (ada ada, shake, destiny, my woman is gone, Chinny Baby).
    4. Wizkid (the matter, Azonto).
    3. Davido (all of a kind, all of u, gobe, Skelewu).
    2. Psquare (alingo, personally, gbade).
    1. Olamide (strt luv, stupid luv, badoo luv, illefo illuminati, v.o.t.s., jale, 1st of all).

  34. fanaily famous says:

    wizkid first joor

  35. gidimike says:

    BOJ nko ?worthyy mention.

  36. Tijanee says:

    Wow! Lolzzz….this is serious!!

  37. TB Art says:

The list are correct and whoever think Wizkid and Davido is hotter than D'banj should please come to Doha, Dubai , Europe how finally is winning new fans, In case you are out of sight you can google it online and educate yourself more. P Square are the number one in Africa while 2 D'banj is second any of you who disagree with the list should go and hug a transformer.

  38. extu says:

    wizkid before davido…

  39. Ceo Bans says:

Just perfect… good list no doubt.

  40. koboko says:

1.Dbanj- acceped i niaja and the world- OLIVER TWIST prince- Aboki -Nice video and acceped world wide
    3. 2BABA- weather his not sing anything is Na baba

7.Olamide- yes he try, but he need to improve in video, and try to put a little effort .
    8. Davido- due to consistence

    (3) Wizkid (Fan Favourite)
    (2) Flavour Nabania (Africa's Best AfroPop by a mile)
    (1) PSQUARE (4 Straight Smash Hits in a Single Year)

Putting legendary 2face and D'Banj in that list is more of sentiment than anything else
Worthy mentions: May D, Phyno, Reminisce, D'Banj, KCEE, D'Prince, J Martins, Waje, Banky WAJE

  42. Man 2 Man says:

Are Nneka and Asa from Jamaica, why are they no where to be found here? or is the list only for pangolo artist dem?

  43. What is Dbanj doing on this list at all? The writer himself admitted that Dbanj did not release a single song that registered on the hit scale in 2012 and 2013. Olive Twist was became a hit initially at the end of 2011 and was the last major song he and Don Jazzy did together. Dbanj has done nothing worth mentioning since Oliver Twist. As other people on this thread have noticed, hard-working, hard-hitting artistes like Flavour have been left out of this list. Even Kcee is missing. I may not really dig his Limpopo song, but the guy has been the hottest thing in music the last 2 months. Una no do well with this list at all.

  44. Hr More says:

    W C original Black Diamond is my # 1………!!!

  45. Richard says:

Where is 9ice on this your list.9ice has been on fire this year.If you doubt me go and listen to jargo where jesse jagz featured him,Feeling you where yemi sax featured him and the mother of all hit songs called ike kan.Abeg in the year 2013 so far 9ice deserves a big mention.

  46. Nice work here, but I feel you should rate wizkid better than Davido, Wande coal (my best Naija Artiste) should at least get a mention if timaya and burna boy could, Tiwa Savage should be on the Top ten for the sake of good music and to respect the female gender (the same reason 2Baba is on the list, respect), and lastly Olamide is far too underrated here..I am not his fan but Naija is currently his studio.. all the same this post is highly timely and appreciated.

  47. JUst me says:

True.. @baba gets praises he doesnt deserve… he is a legend, doesnt mean he is hot at the moment….. Phyno nko? KCee nko? una dey F up ooooh

  48. 1) Psquare (personally) 2)Wizkid (Hit after hit released nearly everyday) 3) Olamide ( Igboro’s finest, the best yoruba artist on the scene plus versality and truth in lyrics) 4)Davido (Hype plus Skelewu) 5)Burnaboy ( Like to party , tonight, run my race plus new sound )Phyno (Igbo champion; indigenous rapping with swag ) 8) Sean Tizzle (Sholee the banger) 9) Kcee (Limpopo fame ) 10) Wande Coal (Rotate, but mainly ‘The Kick’) .

  49. 1) Psquare (personally) 2)Wizkid (Hit after hit released nearly everyday) 3) Olamide ( Igboro’s finest, the best yoruba artist on the scene plus versality and truth in lyrics) 4)Davido (Hype plus Skelewu) 5)Burnaboy ( Like to party , tonight, run my race plus new sound )6)Phyno (Igbo champion; indigenous rapping with swag ) 7) Sean Tizzle (Sholee the banger) 8) Kcee (Limpopo fame ) 9)Wande Coal (Rotate, but mainly ‘The Kick’) , 10) Tiwa ( getting engaged , fashion plus hype )

  50. papalz says:

Sincerely, I think the list were fair, but I feel wizkid is beter nd bigger nd davido, most of the comment below shows that most of you guys didn’t read what was written, they selected hit songs from 2012, oliver twist honest was a huge success both locally nd internationally, don jazzy nd dbanj did a job weLl done. Tiwa hasn’t seen her period, she living on past glory, uur broda banky is more of a business man than a muscian, he sings just to stay relevent
