As the nomination list for the Grammy Awards 2024 draws closer, the possible Nigerian songs that might receive a nomination in the new category introduced have been speculated by Billboard.
The speculation, as well as the eligibility period set by the Recording Academy of projects they might consider for the Grammy Awards 2024, has stirred a major debate on social media as American media outlet Billboard has revealed the only Nigerian songs that might be considered in the new category for African music, the Best African Music Performance category
Billboard confirmed that the fact that arguably one of the biggest songs of 2021 and 2022, Essence and Last Last, lost the best global music performance category might have played a huge role in the Recording Academy's decision to properly recognize the Afrobeats genre and its success with a new category.
Whilst there are top Grammy awards contenders from Nigeria, the predicted nominees for the maiden edition of this category by the media outlet are, "2:30” by Asake; “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” Burna Boy; “Charm,” Rema; “People,” Libianca; “Unavailable,” Davido & Musa Keys; “Soweto,” Victony; “Party No Dey Stop,” Adekunle Gold & Zinoleesky; “Reason,” Omah Lay; “Mnike,” Tyler ICU, Tumelo.za, DJ Maphorisa, Nandipha808, Ceeka RSA & Tyron Dee; and “Amapiano,” Asake & Olamide."
This would see all the names in this category receive their first Grammy award nomination while Burna Boy would be looking at his seventh nomination.
