2Baba, in his latest interview, has shared his thoughts on the ongoing debates that compare Wizkid to the late Fela Kuti.

Veteran Nigerian music icon Innocent “2Baba” Idibia has weighed in on the ongoing debate comparing Afrobeats superstar Wizkid to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, calling the comparison both ridiculous and disrespectful.

Speaking on the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, the “African Queen” singer said placing the two artists side by side ignores the vastly different eras, purposes, and legacies they represent. According to him, such comparisons diminish Fela’s historic impact while also placing an unfair burden on Wizkid, who has carved out his own lane in modern Afrobeats.

2Baba emphasised that Fela remains a one-of-a-kind cultural and political force whose influence transcends music, noting that his sacrifices helped create the global pathways today’s artists enjoy.

At the same time, he acknowledged Wizkid’s immense influence within his generation, stressing that success should be measured within a proper context rather than through forced generational matchups.

The controversy began in January 2026 after Seun Kuti criticised Wizkid’s fanbase for repeatedly invoking Fela’s name to validate the singer’s success. The situation escalated when Wizkid responded on social media, at one point claiming he was “bigger” than Fela, a remark that drew backlash from many music purists.

Members of the Kuti family, including Femi and Yeni Kuti, later urged fans to move on from what they described as an unproductive debate, reiterating that Fela’s revolutionary legacy exists in a space far removed from contemporary commercial achievements.
