The Confederation of African Football ( CAF) have issued fines to Algeria following their misconduct in the quarter-final game against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

CAF confirmed the punishment to the Algerian Football Federation in a communique on Wednesday, January 21, 2025. According to reports, these fines and match bans were issued because the players failed to coordinate themselves in the defeat against Nigeria.

What happened between Nigeria and Algeria?

The Algerian Football Federation was found guilty of multiple breaches of disciplinary and security regulations at AFCON 2025. These included improper conduct by players and team officials, confrontations with match officials after the final whistle, and a failure to adequately control team behaviour.

CAF described the actions as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of fair play.
In addition to issues on the pitch, supporter misconduct also played a role in the sanctions. CAF cited the use of flares, the throwing of objects from the stands, and lapses in stadium security as contributing factors.

How much did CAF fine Algeria?

The Algerian FA was hit with financial penalties totalling around $100,000, covering both team and crowd-related offences.

CAF also went further by issuing player suspensions, which will be served during Algeria’s AFCON 2027 qualification matches. The governing body said the punishment is meant to send a strong message that indiscipline will not be tolerated, especially at major tournaments
