Newsprint walls, Nollywood throwback fits and a storytelling set from an Afrobeat legend made for one of Asaba’s most talked-about nights of the year.
Asaba took a trip back in time on Thursday, 20 August 2026, as Vale Music Entertainment hosted its Y2K Party at The Cave Outdoor, Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria. Headlined by Afrobeat legend African China (Chinagorom Onuoha), the night blended the soundtrack of 2000s Afrobeat with a dress code built around the unforgettable costumes of early Nollywood.
The party was organised by London-based DJ and producer Valentine Obiajulu, known on the decks as Deejay Vx, who founded Vale Music Entertainment. For one night, he brought the energy of the era home to Asaba, and the city showed up for it.
Newsprint walls and throwback fits
The décor was simple but smart. The organisers covered the walls of the venue in old newspapers, turning the whole space into a textured, retro backdrop. It quickly became the most popular photo spot of the night, with guests’ bold Nollywood-inspired looks standing out sharply against the black-and-white print.
African China delivers
Anticipation for African China was high from the start, and not even a travel hiccup could slow him down. His luggage went missing on the flight from Lagos to Asaba, but when he took the stage, none of that showed. He delivered a storytelling set, acoustic and passionate, that took the crowd straight back to the 2000s, with the audience singing along word for word.
One of the standout moments came when Deejay Vx joined African China on stage, performing alongside the Afrobeat veteran in front of a packed Asaba crowd.
The DJs and the crew
Music for the night came from a three-DJ line-up:
DJ Flex (Onyemaechi Ajie) – the Asaba favourite, keeping the throwback Afrobeat energy high all night.
DJ Switchy (Onomefe Oghenekevwe Tobore) – smooth, nostalgic transitions from one era-defining hit to the next.
Deejay Vx (Valentine Obiajulu) – the Vale Music Entertainment founder, who also took control of the decks.
The staff were part of the show too. Even in branded event t-shirts, they leaned into the theme with bandanas, retro makeup and accessories while keeping the drinks moving.
The Nollywood revival
The real stars, though, were the guests. Attendees raided their wardrobes, and their parents’, to pay tribute to early-2000s Nollywood: dramatic leather caps, halter tops and classic denim cuts filled the room.
The verdict
Vale Music Entertainment’s Y2K Party was more than a throwback night. It was a celebration of a defining era in Nigerian pop culture, carried by inventive décor, a resilient and captivating performance from African China, and a DJ line-up that kept the floor full. Asaba will be waiting to see where Deejay Vx and Vale Music Entertainment go next.
