Nigerian afro-house singer Niniola Apata has announced the passing of her husband, Michael Ndika.
The Grammy-nominated singer shared the heartbreaking news through a series of emotional posts on her Instagram Story in the early hours of Wednesday.
In one of the posts, Niniola wrote, “God took him,” before following up with another message that read, “My husband died.” She later added, “God took him. 13 years. 13 f***ing years.” The posts were accompanied by photos of the singer and her late husband.
Ndika, before his death, was reportedly the Chief Executive Officer of NaijaReview, a multimedia platform dedicated to afro-house and contemporary African music.
Details surrounding his death have not been made public. Niniola, who has often kept her personal life away from public attention, has not shared further information about the circumstances.
The 39-year-old singer became widely known after emerging as one of the standout contestants on Project Fame West Africa in 2013. She later grew into one of Nigeria’s most recognised music exports, gaining international attention with her 2017 hit single, Maradona.
