American rapper Nicki Minaj has drawn renewed global attention to reports of religious persecution in Nigeria after delivering an emotional address at a United Nations event hosted by U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

Nicki Minaj, who has recently used her social media platforms to comment on the issue, said her advocacy was part of what led to her invitation. Opening her remarks, she thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for placing the subject on the international agenda.

Speaking to the audience, Minaj explained that her career has shown her how music can unite people across cultures, adding that freedom of belief should never put anyone at risk. She warned that faith “is under attack in way too many places,” stressing that religious freedom must be protected everywhere.

The rapper stated that Christians in parts of Nigeria are facing severe hardship, alleging that many have been displaced, attacked or killed because of their religious identity. According to her, homes have been destroyed, churches burned, and families left in fear simply due to their mode of worship. She called for urgent international action, saying the situation “demands a response.”

Minaj emphasized that her comments were not political, insisting that protecting vulnerable groups should not be viewed as taking sides. She described the issue as a matter of basic humanity and justice.

She concluded by expressing hope that the conversation at the UN would inspire stronger global cooperation to ensure that everyone, regardless of their beliefs, can worship and live in peace.

The remarks of Nicki Minaj come shortly after Trump suggested that Nigeria could be added to the U.S. list of Countries of Particular Concern, warning of potential diplomatic and economic consequences if the reported attacks continue.
