Nigerian fast-rising music star Mavo has received a major career boost after being named Billboard’s African Rookie of the Month, a recognition that places him firmly among the continent’s most exciting new acts.

The 22-year-old singer and rapper, born Oseremen Ukanigbe Marvin, has been gaining global attention for his energetic mix of Afrobeats, rap, and his own homegrown styles, which he proudly calls Burbur Music and Bizzylingua. Billboard’s latest nod highlights the growing influence of his sound and the momentum he has built in a short time.

Mavo’s journey into music began while he was studying medicine in Ekpoma, Edo State. Recording from his campus room, he eventually released his debut project, Ukanigbe, in late 2023, a move that marked the official start of his professional career. His popularity skyrocketed shortly after with the viral success of Escaladizzy, a collaboration that dominated social media trends, racked up millions of streams, and introduced him to a wider audience eager for something fresh and unconventional.

His appeal lies in his raw storytelling, catchy melodies, and his growing collection of unique slang expressions, all of which have helped him build a strong following among young listeners who connect deeply with his authenticity.

“My music is my real story,” Mavo has said about his process. “So when people vibe with it, they’re really connecting with who I am.”

Billboard’s African Rookie of the Month recognition is reserved for new artists shaping the sound of modern African music. For Mavo, it signals an important milestone, one that confirms his rise and hints at an even bigger international breakthrough on the horizon.
