Afrobeats icon Tiwa Savage isn’t holding back against critics who frequently target her for choosing to wear bikinis.
Tiwa Savage recently opened up about facing constant backlash for wearing revealing outfits, particularly from those who claim her age should dictate how she dresses.
Speaking on the Receipts podcast, Savage aired her frustrations over the double standards she faces. While international stars like Beyoncé are praised for their beauty and style in their 40s, Savage notes that Nigerians often resort to age-shaming instead.
“They age-shame me every single day,” she revealed. “They say, a woman of you age, how can you be wearing a bikini? I can because I have a body.”
Savage also pointed out the stark contrast in cultural reactions, citing how Americans celebrate older women who maintain their youthful looks. “Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis but Americans don’t age shame her. They would be like, for her age, black don’t crack. It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.”
The criticism doesn’t stop there. Savage shared that detractors often bring up her son, suggesting he might feel ashamed of her photos in the future. However, she shut down that narrative, declaring, “My son is going to be like, my mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.”
