Ghanaian music stars Sarkodie and Stonebwoy have become involved in a public exchange on social media, with both artists offering different accounts of their private conversations and the circumstances surrounding their strained relationship.
The disagreement centres on alleged indirect social media posts, industry principles, and whether the two musicians have been consistent in their dealings with each other. Stonebwoy has questioned Sarkodie’s conduct, while Sarkodie has denied deliberately targeting him or making some of the statements attributed to him.
Sarkodie’s message to his fanbase sparked the exchange
The latest disagreement began after Sarkodie shared a message on September 7, urging members of his SarkNation fanbase to support his music without attacking rival artists. He cautioned against toxic fan wars and warned artists not to encourage supporters who insult other musicians in the name of loyalty.
Stonebwoy subsequently responded to the message, questioning whether Sarkodie’s public advice was consistent with his own actions and the principles he had expressed during their private conversations.
Stonebwoy questioned Sarkodie’s social media posts
In his response, Stonebwoy recalled calling Sarkodie after his Rapperholic show at the Royal Albert Hall in the UK to congratulate him. According to Stonebwoy, the two spoke for more than 10 minutes.
He claimed that after his own performance at the OVO Arena Wembley, Sarkodie shared a second video on social media that he interpreted as carrying an indirect message. Stonebwoy said only Sarkodie could explain what he intended to communicate through the post.
Stonebwoy also stated that he later contacted Sarkodie after noticing what he described as cryptic posts, leading to another conversation between the two artists.
The private phone conversation became a major point of disagreement
Stonebwoy said their subsequent phone conversation lasted more than an hour and covered industry behaviour, relationships, and differing perspectives.
According to his account, Sarkodie told him that no artist could be forced to uphold a particular principle and that musicians sometimes acted according to what benefited them. Stonebwoy used this alleged position to challenge the consistency of Sarkodie’s public advice.
He concluded his message with the statement: “Without PRINCIPLE, advice is an OPINION.”
Sarkodie denied the allegation and rejected claims of indirect attacks
Sarkodie responded with a lengthy statement, rejecting Stonebwoy’s account of their conversation. He specifically denied saying that artists should act according to whatever benefited them and accused Stonebwoy of misrepresenting his words.
The rapper also insisted that he had never made a social media post intended to shade Stonebwoy. He questioned why Stonebwoy had connected the posts to himself and explained that he usually avoids responding to interpretations created by fans, but chose to address the matter because Stonebwoy had raised it directly.
The artists disagreed over loyalty and how to handle industry relationships
Sarkodie explained that his position during their private conversation was that individuals had the right to decide whether to forgive or maintain relationships with others, but could not control how another person chose to handle those same situations.
He also argued that Stonebwoy associated with people who had disrespected him, but said he had never assumed that Stonebwoy supported their actions. According to Sarkodie, the two artists did not have to share identical views or relationships to maintain mutual respect.
He maintained that their common goal could be to succeed together where possible, while accepting that they might not always agree.
Sarkodie pointed to previous efforts to maintain their relationship
In defending his position, Sarkodie said he had repeatedly reached out to Stonebwoy to resolve misunderstandings. He cited inviting him to his Royal Albert Hall show, congratulating him on career milestones, and discussing opportunities for them to perform together.
Sarkodie argued that these actions demonstrated that he did not harbour animosity towards Stonebwoy. He also expressed frustration that their private disagreements had become public, suggesting that he had made efforts to address similar concerns directly in the past.
The public disagreement has renewed conversations about the relationship between the two Ghanaian music stars, particularly their differing expectations of loyalty, professional conduct, and how artists should respond to perceived disrespect.
