Nigerian singer-songwriter CKay has shared his thoughts on the public's perception of his smile, stating that he refuses to pretend constant happiness.

In a recent interview on Joey Akan's Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, CKay revealed that fans and critics often tell him he should smile more. However, he believes this expectation is largely based on his public image, particularly in photos.

"I think people build a perception of me needing to smile more because of pictures," CKay explained. "Maybe I don't smile enough in pictures."

Also, the singer linked his smile to his music, revealing that his upcoming album was created during a challenging period. "I wasn't smiling when I started working on this album…the mood was reality," he said.

Additionally, CKay emphasized the importance of authenticity in his art, refusing to solely focus on positive emotions. "Making music only about the positive things won't be realistic…positive and negative emotions happen to a person, so I say making art has to represent both."

Lastly, by staying true to his emotions, CKay aims to create genuine, relatable music that reflects life's complexities.
