Global music icon Akon was arrested and briefly taken into custody in Georgia, USA, earlier this month after police discovered an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

The 52-year-old singer and producer, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, was arrested by Chamblee Police on the morning of November 7 and later released after several hours in detention, according to reports from TMZ and local authorities.

DeKalb County jail records show that the Locked Up crooner was booked and processed before being released the same day. His mugshot, shared online, shows the artist in a black hoodie with a calm, expressionless look.

The arrest stemmed from a bench warrant issued in Roswell, Georgia, over a prior case involving a suspended driver’s license. Court documents indicate that the situation dates back to September when Akon’s Tesla Cybertruck reportedly broke down on the road due to a dead battery. Police officers who responded to the scene discovered that his license had been suspended after he failed to appear in court for a separate matter in January 2023.

Akon was issued a citation for driving with a suspended license and released at the time. Authorities also confiscated what they described as an “illegal vape” found in the car. However, a warrant was later issued for his failure to appear in court regarding the citation, leading to his arrest on November 7.

He was taken to the DeKalb County Jail and released within six hours. As of this report, Akon and his representatives have not issued any public statement regarding the incident.

The five-time Grammy nominee remains one of the defining voices of the 2000s, known for global hits like Lonely, Smack That, and I Wanna Love You. Beyond music, Akon has ventured into philanthropy and business, including his ambitious plans to build “Akon City,” a futuristic smart city in Senegal powered by his own digital currency, Akoin.

Despite the minor legal hiccup, Akon arrested in Georgia, the singer appears to be continuing his work and has not commented publicly on whether the incident will affect his ongoing projects.
