Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained why Estevao Willian has struggled to get regular playing time this season, pointing to the physical demands of English football and the Brazilian youngster's recovery from injury.

The 19-year-old was left on the bench throughout Chelsea's Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool on Wednesday, October 28, despite supporters calling for him to be introduced during the game. Chelsea eventually lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Alonso admitted that he understands the youngster's frustration, acknowledging that every player wants to be involved regularly. However, the Spanish manager insisted that there will be opportunities for Estevao as the season progresses.

Speaking after the defeat to Liverpool, Alonso said:

"I understand his situation and that he could be happier for sure. Every player wants to play, wants to be part of the team."

The Chelsea boss also highlighted the intensity of the Premier League, explaining that Estevao is still adapting to its physical demands following his injury.

He added,

"Yes, we know that the Premier League and the game in England is really intense. You need to be up for it. Este has played, for sure, it's his second season. But he had the injury and he's in that process."

Despite the limited opportunities, Alonso expressed confidence that the Brazilian will play an important role for Chelsea before the end of the campaign.

"Trust me, I'm sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role," he concluded.
