Super Eagles of Nigeria defender and captain William Troost-Ekong has equalled a long-standing record at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have a new hero in the form of their captain, William Troost-Ekong. The defender has made history at the Africa Cup of Nations by equaling the long-standing record held by the legendary Stephen Keshi. Troost-Ekong has now scored four goals in all AFCON competitions, a feat that has only been achieved by the iconic Keshi.
However, Troost-Ekong is not done yet, as he has the potential to surpass Keshi's record and become the highest-scoring defender in the tournament. In the recent match against South Africa, the Super Eagles showed their mettle by winning on penalties after an exhilarating 1-1 draw that lasted for 120 minutes. The captain led by example and opened the scoring with his second goal of the tournament, following his impressive strike against hosts Ivory Coast in the group stage.
Troost-Ekong's goal gave Nigeria the lead, and he showed his defensive prowess by keeping South Africa at bay for most of the game. Troost-Ekong's contributions have been vital to Nigeria's success in the tournament, and he is fast becoming a fan favourite and a leadership figure in the team as well.
