Following recent updates, there is speculation that Chelsea's Joao Pedro might still play at the 2026 World Cup instead of Neymar Jr.
Chelsea forward João Pedro could still be handed a late route into Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad following fresh injury concerns around Neymar.
Neymar was named in Brazil’s final squad by head coach Carlo Ancelotti despite concerns over his fitness, with the Brazilian star only recently returning from a long injury-hit period. However, reports have now confirmed that the Santos forward has suffered a calf injury, raising fresh doubts over his condition ahead of the tournament.
Although the injury is not currently expected to rule Neymar out completely, the timing has created uncertainty around Brazil’s attacking options. With the World Cup fast approaching, Ancelotti may be forced to consider standby alternatives if Neymar’s fitness becomes a bigger concern before the tournament begins.
That could open the door for João Pedro, who was one of the surprise omissions from Brazil’s squad. The Chelsea attacker enjoyed a strong season at club level and had been viewed by many as a player capable of offering Brazil something different in attack. His ability to play as a central striker, drop deeper, link play and operate across the front line makes him a useful option if Brazil need extra attacking depth.
For now, Neymar remains part of Brazil’s plans, and medical staff are reportedly hopeful he will recover in time to join the national team camp. But if his condition worsens or Brazil decide not to take any risks, João Pedro could emerge as one of the most logical replacements.
