Chelsea Football Club have been left without a direct replacement for Enzo Fernández after the Argentine midfielder completed a sensational £125 million move to Manchester City.
The Blues had anticipated Fernández’s departure and moved to strengthen their midfield, but a dramatic Deadline Day collapse prevented them from completing their preferred deal. Lamine Camara was the planned replacement. Chelsea identified Monaco midfielder as their preferred option to replace Fernández.
The 22-year-old Senegal international was viewed as a player capable of adding energy, technical quality, and versatility to Xabi Alonso's midfield. Chelsea initially saw a £38.5 million offer rejected before eventually reaching an agreement with Monaco worth around £47 million.
Monaco pulled the plug which saw the deal dramatically collapse despite Chelsea believing an agreement had been reached. Monaco ultimately decided against selling Camara, leaving Chelsea with little time to find another suitable midfielder before the transfer window closed. Reports described the situation as one of the most chaotic sagas of Deadline Day.
What does the failure of Lamine Camara mean to Chelsea?
The biggest problem for Chelsea was the timing: Fernández's £125 million transfer to Manchester City was completed right at the end of the window, meaning Chelsea could not simply spend the proceeds on another midfielder. The club had already explored alternatives, including Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Roma's Manu Koné, but neither option materialised before the deadline.
Chelsea will now have to begin the season without Fernández and without the reinforcement they wanted to bring in for him. While Moisés Caicedo remains a key part of the midfield, losing Fernández's creativity, passing range and ability to control games represents a significant change.
Ultimately, Chelsea did have a replacement plan but Monaco's late decision to retain Camara destroyed that plan at the worst possible moment. The Blues will now have to rely on their existing midfield options until the next opportunity to strengthen arrives.
