Former Manchester United player, Wayne Rooney has revealed the most tactical manager he played under while he was at Old Trafford.

The England International enjoyed the best time of his playing career at Old Trafford when Sir Alex Ferguson was the manager of the club. Rooney won five Premier League titles under the Scottish man, amongst other domestic trophies including the UEFA Champions League.

He also played under Luis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho after the departure of Sir Alex in 2013. Rooney was speaking in a podcast with Sky Bet, where he was asked who is the best most tactical manager he played under when he was a footballer.

He said that Van Gaal tops the list of the best managers he played under as a footballer.

“I remember Louis van Gaal when he came in, I thought tactically he was the best I’ve worked with. It was the stuff off the pitch that was difficult for the players in how he worked, but I remember him coming in and saying he wants his centre forward to have 15, 20 touches a game that’s exactly what [Erling] Haaland does. I always wanted to play and enjoy the game and score goals.”

Van Gaal’s time at Old Trafford lasted for just two seasons with the Red Devils and was sacked after he led them to win the FA Cup in 2016.
