UEFA has strongly criticized FIFA following the governing body's decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban handed to Folarin Balogun after his red card at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

UEFA released in a strongly worded statement released on Monday, UEFA described FIFA's decision as "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable," warning that it threatens the integrity of football and sets a dangerous precedent.

What happened to Folarin Balogun?

Balogun had been sent off during the United States' victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a dismissal that automatically carried a one-match suspension under FIFA's disciplinary regulations. However, FIFA later decided to suspend the implementation of that ban for a one-year probationary period, making the striker eligible for the USA's knockout clash with Belgium.

Reacting to the decision, UEFA said FIFA had "crossed a red line," arguing that an automatic suspension following a red card is a fundamental rule that should not be subject to discretionary exceptions, particularly in the middle of a major tournament.

The European governing body added that if such rules can be altered, the credibility and fairness of the competition are placed at risk. UEFA also warned that the ruling creates a precedent that could force similar treatment in future disciplinary cases during the tournament, undermining consistent application of the Laws of the Game.
