President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fully redeemed the Federal Government’s reward package to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed on September 9, 2026, that the naira equivalent of $100,000 had been paid to each D’Tigress player, while members of the team’s technical and coaching staff received the equivalent of $50,000 each.
The payment completes the reward package announced by President Tinubu after D’Tigress made history by winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title for a record fifth consecutive time and seventh overall.
Following their 78-64 victory over Mali in the AfroBasket final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the Federal Government announced a major reward package for the team.
Each player was promised:, $100,000 cash reward, and a three-bedroom apartment in Abuja Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national honour.
Members of the coaching and technical team were also promised $50,000 each, alongside housing and national honours.
The housing documents and OON certificates were handed to the players and officials in February 2026 during their participation in the FIBA World Cup qualifying tournament in Lyon, France.
With the latest cash payments, the NSC says the entire presidential reward package has now been fulfilled.
Recognition for Nigeria’s basketball stars D’Tigress’ achievement at the 2025 AfroBasket was historic.
Their victory over Mali extended Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball and made them the first team to win the Women’s AfroBasket five consecutive times.
The team’s success also secured Nigeria’s place at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, further underlining their importance to Nigerian sports.
The Federal Government has described the rewards as part of its commitment to improving athletes’ welfare and recognising exceptional performances on the international stage.
