Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has shared his criticism about the signing of Matthijs de Ligt by Man United in the summer 2024 transfer window.

Liverpool legend, Graeme Souness has raised concerns about Man United's acquisition of Matthijs de Ligt, describing the Dutch defender as a "lightweight" center-back.

The former Liverpool player is skeptical about whether De Ligt can provide the defensive solidity United needs, especially after losing experienced players like Raphael Varane.

Souness highlighted De Ligt’s limited role with the Dutch national team and his transfers from top clubs like Bayern Munich and Juventus as reasons to question his current form and fit for United.

Souness elaborated on his concerns by stating that De Ligt's recent performances haven't matched the potential he showed during his early days at Ajax. He believes United requires a more commanding figure in defence, similar to Jonny Evans, who has already proven his worth at the club.

Souness remains unconvinced that De Ligt has the necessary attributes to meet Manchester United's defensive requirements at this stage. He said, “I’m not convinced De Ligt is the right fit for United. He didn’t make the Dutch national team’s starting lineup during the Euros, and his exits from top clubs like Bayern Munich and Juventus raise questions. I see him as a lightweight center-half, and United need someone who can lead and defend solidly. They need a commanding presence, like Jonny Evans, who has proven himself with 23 appearances for the club. De Ligt’s abilities don’t align with United’s pressing needs.”
