Raphaël Varane has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to leave Real Madrid for Manchester United.

The France international described the move as a search for a new challenge after achieving everything possible in Spain. He explained that after a decade at the Santiago Bernabé where he won multiple La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies—he felt it was the right moment to step out of his comfort zone for a new challenge.

Varane said he needed a fresh motivation and believed his cycle at Madrid had naturally come to an end, despite still being at the top level.

Why did Raphael Varane leave Real Madrid?

He said,

After we won the Champions League in 2018, we barely celebrated it. It felt like a normal thing, just another step; our mindset was already on winning the next Champions League. Then, that same summer, I won the World Cup. I needed new challenges."

He also pointed to the appeal of the Premier League, calling it a unique and demanding competition that he had always wanted to experience. According to Varane, Manchester United’s history, global stature, and long-term project played a major role in convincing him to make the switch.

Varane added that United’s ambition to return to the top of English and European football resonated strongly with him. He felt his experience and winning mentality could help the club rebuild and compete for major trophies again, making the move not just a change of scenery, but a purposeful next step in his career.
