The Premier League has seen some outstanding records over the years since its inception in 1992, with some clubs building unwanted reputations for discipline issues in certain campaigns.

Most times Red cards can reflect aggressive tactical approaches, they often end up costing teams valuable points.

Here’s a look at the clubs that hold the record for the most red cards in a single Premier League season including the latest update from the 2025/26 campaign.

Sunderland (2009/10) – 9 Red Cards

Sunderland hold the joint record for the most red cards in a single Premier League season. During the 2009/10 campaign, the Black Cats were shown nine red cards, a record that still stands today. It was a turbulent season marked by inconsistency and disciplinary struggles.

Queens Park Rangers (2011/12) – 9 Red Cards

Queens Park Rangers matched Sunderland’s record in the 2011/12 season. Their nine red cards reflected a combative campaign as they battled relegation. Discipline proved costly throughout that survival fight.

Clubs With 8 Red Cards in a Season
Several clubs have come close to the record with eight dismissals in a single campaign:

Newcastle United (2008/09)
West Ham United (1999/00)
Blackburn Rovers (1998/99)
Leicester City (1994/95)
These seasons were often defined by physical contests and high-pressure situations.

Chelsea (2025/26) – 7 Red Cards

Chelsea FC have also entered the conversation this season. In the ongoing 2025/26 campaign, the Blues have accumulated seven red cards in Premier League matches, including Pedro Neto’s dismissal against Arsenal.

While still short of the all-time record, Chelsea’s tally already ranks among the highest in league history for a single season. If disciplinary issues continue, they could edge closer to Sunderland and QPR’s long-standing record.
