Africa recorded her first medal in Gymnastics at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic games as Algeria's teenage sensation, Kaylia Nemour won Gold.
She went against all odds by getting past some of the big names in the competition and registering her country’s first medal at the 2024 Olympic Games. The 17-year-old French-born athlete left the spectators speechless at the Bercy Arena on Sunday, August 4, 2024, as she came in first place ahead of China’s Qiu Qiyuan with American Sunisa Lee snatching bronze while defending Champion, Defending Olympic uneven bars champion Nina Derwael of Belgium finished in fourth place.
The Algerian’s fast-paced routine which featured a number of complex release-and-catch manoeuvres delighted the crowd . Kaylia Nemour broke down in tears as soon as she was done knowing she has done her country and Africa proud. She started representing Algeria since 2023 after her issue with the French was sorted.
Nemour has competed for Algeria since last year after a dispute with the French gymnastics federation but found plenty of support at the Bercy Arena. The young gymnast broke down in tears after it was confirmed by the judges that she finished in first place.
