Newcastle United have released an official statement as it involves Sandro Tonali's betting scandal when he was with AC Milan.
The Premier League club confirmed on its official website on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. According to the magpies, Lisandro Tonali is currently under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor's office and the Italian Football Federation.
"Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) about illegal betting activity.
Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities.
He and his family will continue to receive the club's full support. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time."
The midfielder could not suspended for a long time after he confessed to placing bets on matches involving AC Milan when he was a player with the Serie A club.
This admission complicates the situation because he insists that he did not place bets on Milan matches when he was playing and, if this claim is accepted, Tonali will not be charged with match-fixing as he would not have influenced a match.
