Top Nigerian athlete at the Olympics 2024 suspended

A top Nigerian athlete representing the country in the Olympics 2024 boxing competition has been suspended from participating.

On Saturday, July 27, 2024, the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced that Nigerian athlete and lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore had been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance. This suspension comes just before her opening fight at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Ogunsemilore tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic listed on WADA’s prohibited list, during an out-of-competition doping control conducted on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

"The athlete has been notified of the case and provisionally suspended until the matter is resolved, in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Anti-Doping Rules," stated the ITA.

As a result, Ogunsemilore is barred from training, coaching, or participating in any activities during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which is a significant setback for Team Nigeria.
