The news was confirmed on the official website of Ajax on Monday, February 7th, 2022. According to reports from the club, Overmars decided that it was in the best interest of everyone involved that he steps down from his position. The decision was taken after a meeting was held with the club's board of directors.

Overmas was speaking in an interview on the club's website after the decision was taken at the interest of the club.

I am ashamed. Last week I was confronted with reports concerning my behaviour and how that has come across to others. Unfortunately, I did not realise that I was crossing the line with this, but that was made clear to me in recent days. I suddenly feel enormous pressure, I apologise. Certainly, for someone in my position, this behaviour is unacceptable, I now see that too. But, it is too late. I see no other option but to beave Ajax. This only has a major impact on my private situation. That is why I ask everyone to leave me and my family alone.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Edwin Van de Sar who serves as Ajax Executive Officer also said the whole situation is appalling to everyone that is involved.

In my role, I feel responsible to help colleagues. A safe sport and a working climate are very important. We will pay even more attention to this in the near future. Marc and I have been playing together since the early 1990's first at Ajax then with the national team and we have been colleagues in the management of Ajax for almost 10 years now. That has now come to a very abrupt end. We are working on something wonderful here at Ajax, so this news will be a blow to everyone who cares about Ajax.

Overmars was a fantastic player for Ajax in his playing days. He won three League titles, the Dutch Cup and the UEFA Champions League before joining Arsenal kn 1997. He won the double with the Gunners in 1998 before moving to Barcelona in 2000, he later retired from football in 2004
